iPad Schemes

There are three methods by which a student can use an iPad at Tomlinscote.

The details of all three options can be found below.  it is important to note that whichever method is chosen by parents, the experience for all students is the same.  There is no educational advantage to the BYOI, one-off contribution or monthly contributions - all students have access to the same apps and services.

Bring Your Own iPad

The ‘Bring Your Own Device’ model is now popular at many schools and colleges, and at Tomlinscote we fully support the use of pre-owned iPad's at school. However, the school requires consistency across all staff and student devices. For this reason, any device that a student wishes to use at school must meet certain criteria:

  • It must be a 10th-generation iPad or newer. We recommend the 11th-generation iPad (A16).
  • It must have at least 128GB of storage.
  • It must be a full-size iPad, not an iPad mini. For consistency, compatibility and value for money, we recommend choosing a standard iPad rather than an iPad Air or iPad Pro, for which we cannot guarantee full support.
  • It must be a Wi-Fi-only model without cellular or mobile data capability, preventing the school’s internet filtering and supervision arrangements from being bypassed.
  • We strongly recommend using a suitable protective case and screen protector and arranging appropriate insurance. The school cannot accept responsibility for the loss of, or damage to, a personally owned iPad.

If parents wish to provide an iPad for their child without opting for a contribution programme through the school, they are required to make a one-off payment online to register the device with the school Mobile Device Management system (MDM) for the duration of your child's time at Tomlinscote.

The day before your child’s scheduled iPad setup session (for the new Year 7 cohort) or on their first day (for those joining the school after November of Year 7), the iPad must be factory reset and brought into school for enrolment. This is in order to enable the school to supervise iPad for use with Apple Classroom, as well as the registration of the device to our Mobile Device Management System.

Once registered, the iPad will receive all of the same benefits as the lease scheme iPad's. This includes the automatic installation of school apps and services. It will also help in the event that an iPad goes missing or is stolen.

Insurance
Parents who provide an iPad for their child are strongly advised to arrange insurance cover for the device.

In some cases it may be possible to add the device to your home and contents insurance, but always make sure that the device will be covered outside the home. It also possible to insure single devices through a wide range of providers.

One-Off Parent Contribution Option

Under this option, you make a one-off contribution to Tomlinscote towards the cost of the school providing your child’s iPad package. The contribution is collected by Edutech via Direct Debit on the school’s behalf.

This is a parent contribution towards the school’s iPad programme and is not the purchase or lease of an iPad from either Tomlinscote or Edutech.

The package includes:

  • The latest iPad, including an official Apple charger and cable.
  • A protection package (3-years for Year 7-9 scheme, 2 years for optional Year 10-11 scheme, varying for mid-year starters at parent discretion) covering accidental damage and mechanical breakdown, with no excess. Accidental damage claims are subject to a fair-use limit equal to the iPad’s original retail value during each 12-month period of protection.
  • A sturdy protective case featuring the Tomlinscote logo.
  • Two 6H-hardness screen protectors, including one spare, to help keep the device in good condition.
  • Registration with the school’s Mobile Device Management system for the remainder of their time at Tomlinscote.

The iPad is not being purchased or leased by parents at the outset. It is provided by the school and remains the property of the school throughout the programme. Subject to all agreed contributions having been received, ownership of the iPad will transfer to the parent at the end of the programme.

For new Year 7 students, the scheme will launch during early-October, with iPads to be distributed in sessions in November where your child will be taught the rules of using the iPad.

For students entering the school mid-year or at the start of Year 8, 9, 10 or 11, the school will advise parents on the best course of action and which device option might be best and arrange a setup session.

Monthly Parent Contributions Option

Under this option, you make a number of monthly contributions (depending on whether it is the Year 7-9 scheme or optional Year 10-11 scheme) to Tomlinscote towards the cost of the school providing your child with the same iPad package described under the one-off contribution option. The contributions are collected by Edutech via Direct Debit on the school’s behalf.

These are parent contributions towards the school’s iPad programme and do not constitute the purchase or lease of an iPad from either Tomlinscote or Edutech.
