Statement of Curriculum Intent
The Music curriculum intends to ignite curiosity in Music as a language, entertainment form and creative endeavour. We prepare our students to be global citizens who appreciate different cultures and expressions through the medium of music. We encourage our students to be critical analysts of music who can form personal opinions that they can articulate. Our students experience a broad and ambitious music curriculum which is rich in both knowledge and skill, and develop, through academic study, into competent musicians.

Our music curriculum will provide students the opportunity to:
- develop a thorough understanding of music, through performing, composing listening, and analysing.
- gain an appreciation of the historical, contemporary, ethnic, elements of music, and recognise the cultural diversity of the music community.
- be creative in both performance, and composition.
- develop self-confidence in and outside of the classroom.
- show understanding of how music can support the development of life skills, such as confidence, self-awareness, perseverance, and discipline and provide a holistic experience that they can take beyond their musical studies.
- develop cross-curricular skills of problem-solving, perseverance, diligence, teamwork, time management, organisation, responsibility, and cultural history.
Key Stage 3
In KS3, students are encouraged to explore music in a variety of ways whilst focusing on building key skills such as; composing, performing and listening. Students will learn about various composers and musicians, whilst developing an appreciation of the historical and cultural origins for each of the styles of music they explore. Alongside this, students will also be encouraged to develop other life skills such as resilience, problem-solving, collaborative learning, independence, creativity and enjoyment.
Key Stage 4
In KS4, students develop their strengths in performing and composing. They embark on a two-year programme of study following the OCR exam board. Students apply their knowledge and understanding practically, including using musical vocabulary and notation as appropriate. Students are required to demonstrate their skills as performers, composers and with an ability to analyse and evaluate music through listening to various genres, styles and key composers.
