Geography

Statement of Curriculum Intent

Geography  ‘To become a global citizen that is aware of natural, human and environmental changes in order to build a sustainable future.’

We strive to create opportunities which will inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.

We cover a broad geographical spectrum of contemporary global issues and teach students a range of geographical skills, for example, cartographic and statistical analysis.  This enables them to develop the knowledge and skills required for GCSE.

This means:

  • Developing contextual knowledge of the location of globally significant places.
  • Understanding the processes that give rise to key physical and human geographical features of the world.
  • Recognising that such processes bring about spatial variation and change over time
  • Understanding geographic perspective of scale.
  • Interpretation of geographical sources (e.g. maps, satellite images, graphs, photos,   GIS, news and academic articles.
  • Developing decision-making skills. Weighing up strengths and weaknesses of different responses to issues.
  • Extended writing: being able to assess and evaluate.
  • Developing a range of numerical skills (mode, median, range, mean, interquartile ranges and percentages).
  • Producing and completing graphs e.g. flood hydrograph and climate graph.
  • Learning fieldwork skills- how to structure enquiry, data collection and presentation, primary and secondary data analysis, evaluation of their fieldwork.
Key Stage 3

Students study a range of topics throughout KS3 as a basis for KS4 study. They have physical and human modules with different elements including; map skills, tectonics, rivers, population, coasts, globalisation. This builds the foundation for the topics and skills students need at KS4.

Key Stage 4

At GCSE we study the Edexcel B specification. This has multiple modules which include geography at a national and international scale. Topics include development, physical and human geography of the UK and an element of fieldwork that is tested in the exam. We take the students on two small field trips throughout their GCSE study, one to the River Tillingbourne and the other to Guildford. The geography department also offers a residential trip to Swanage as an extra-curricular activity.
