What is the difference between Site Carpentry and Brick Laying?

The Site Carpentry Level 2 and Level 3 Diplomas have been developed to give students both the knowledge and practical skills to use within the construction industry. Students undertaking this hands on vocational subject will learn about the preparation and use of power tools, first fix and second fix operations, structural carcassing and maintenance to non-structural carpentry work. In addition to these key aspects, both courses cover Health and Safety in the construction industry, as well as understanding construction technology, communication and quantities. Each Diploma is carried out over two full days in our purpose built workshops on the college site.

The Brick Laying Level 2 and Level 3 Diplomas have been specifically designed to give students the knowledge, understanding and practical skills to use within the Brick Laying area of the construction industry. Students undertaking this practical qualification will learn about the interpretation of working drawings to set out masonry structures and the basics of thin joint and masonry cladding. In addition, students will gain the experience of building solid walling, independent and attached piers and the building of cavity walling forming masonry structures.

    What do we offer?

We can offer both the Level 2 and Level 3 Diplomas courses in both aspects of the construction industry outlined above. There are progression routes available which are suited to all types of learner.

Typically, in Year 1, students will follow the Level 2 Cskills Awards Diploma in either discipline (Site Carpentry or Brick Laying) - this is determined by the student at interview dependent upon their choice of qualification or chosen interest. Year two of the course could follow either pathway outlined below:

At the end of the first year, there are two possible routes for students to follow for the second year:

    • Students who pass the Level 2 qualification in the first year at a high level and who show a natural aptitude and skill within that particular area of construction can choose to continue with that discipline and progress onto the Level 3 Cskills Diploma in that same discipline.
    • Students who do not pass the Level 2 qualification at a high enough level or those who wish to have experience of both disciplines (Site Carpentry and Brick Laying) can choose to progress onto the Level 2 Cskills Diploma in the second year in the second discipline (either Site Carpentry or Brick Laying, dependent upon what they have studied in the first year) to ensure that they have a breadth of experience in both areas of construction.
